Making the most of it with GaryVee

Many have been asking me how we got Gary Vaynerchuk to get on our rides in Hong Kong. So here is how the story goes.

We met Jan Smejkal at RISE 2016 for the first time. He posted on Facebook startup communities for a meet up with other fellow Hong Kong startuppers so we met up and kept in touch.

Rumor has it Jan stalked Gary in New York vigorously earlier this year and finally convinced him to talk on stage in Hong Kong in the wake of this year’s Rise Conference. Perseverance always wins.

We got connected with Jan and decided to give his and Gary’s crew a ride from the convention center where Rise was held to the venue of Jan’s Startup Grind talk gig in Central.

15 minutes was how long the ride would take. Pretty short. So our question was: how to make the most of it?

Jan and Gary are vloggers so obviously they will have camera crews with them. So we got an eye-catching white Model X and wrapped it around with our brand. We had little water bottles with our logos on it and had stickers all over.

We set up team members at the starting point and end point to capture it all on video. Of course, cameras were installed inside the vehicle, too.

We had a tight budget with no professional camera crew and had only three team members. Smartphones, one Gopro and two Xiaomi Yi Action Cameras were all the equipment we had. The magic was to take all shots in the same 16:9 aspect ratio.

It was far from perfect but meticulous planning and rehearsals made it all work.

Luckily, our designer Joohan was fluent in After Effects and with the magic of editing and music, this video came to be alongside other numerous contents for our Facebook page and blogs.

It could have just been a simple task of getting Gary from one place to another, but we’re glad we made the most of it by documenting it and sharing this fun experience with others.

As the Gary saying goes, “Have the audacity to go for it.”

Platform is new sexy of wings for today’s business

How high can we fly? Without a doubt, higher than the sun. So we need wings not made of wax but something bigger and stronger. Even better, we all can fly together.

We now live in a ‘networked age’ that encourages businesses to stop being at each other’s throat but to connect. Being connected is the new sexy of wings for today’s businesses. We call this the platform business model. Businesses can stand on platforms together and get lifted up, up and beyond.

The beauty of platform business is that anything can happen with it. You can create values by mixing and matching different products built by different businesses or individuals. No need to go to through gigantic moves like acquisition and merging. Just simple partnerships. The less complex it is, the better.

It’s democratic. Platforms rely on the network effects to work. They need to attract more players to interact and create value. Whoever you are, you can join a platform as a producer (like Uber driver) or consumers (like Uber passenger) or as an external developer who can add useful functions to the platform for producers and consumers. Even if you are small business, if you can add value, you’re in. You just need to catch the right tide.

Platforms connect us to each other, showing us what we’re capable of. Platforms can put democracy into practice. A good platform is a collection of motivated players that aim to become a vibrant community. Anything can happen.

But how? Creating something better and new is possible when diverse voices are heard. Creators of platforms need a “good set of rules that concerns who gets to participate, how to divide value and how to resolve conflict,” according to Platform Revolution.

First of all, it adds, platforms should not let players hide important information from other players to their advantage. You can’t let a producer sell fake Chanel bags to buyers who believe they are real designer bags. Trust is what glues us together, ain’t it? Secondly, platform should make sure only those involve in a given interaction get the benefit. Platform needs to keep good track of who is responsible for a good value created.

Thirdly, it should prevent one supplier from having too much power. We don’t want him to demand special favors or ridiculously high prices. Lastly, platforms should reduce all risks that may tarnish good interaction to bad ones.

More and more companies are shifting to  become platforms. Why? Well, first of all, it’s cool. And, it helps business to scale up more, create new values and changes our lives. Platforms touch almost all aspects of our lives now like how we move (Uber), spend the night (Airbnb), how we communicate (WeChat), how we meet new people (Tinder) and so on.

It honors changes and create values that makes our lives better. We should be glad it’s here to stay.

Easiway sponsors STARTUP GRIND talk with GaryVee talk in Hong Kong

Easiway, ride-booking app in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, is one of the official sponsors of STARTUP GRIND’s FIRESIDE CHAT WITH THE LEGENDARY GARY VAYNERCHUK, held on July 12. (Thank you, Jan Smejkal! We can’t wait to see you talk with this guy on stage.)

This is exciting for us because Gary Vaynerchuk, CEO and co-founder of VaynerMedia, represents what everyone at Easiway believes in which is loving people.

In the world where social media takes over, we tend to take relationships lightly and become more isolated. Thanks to the online dating apps, it is easier for us to meet new people with every swipe and more people get ghosted. It’s halloween every day. (YouGov/Huffington Post’s 2015 survey shows over 10% Americans have ghosted someone. Just awful!)

We should use social media to engage with others regardless of any boundaries. Gary here does not take the social media for granted and he is a guy who hasn’t forgotten what’s important.

Digital era or not, one thing is constant: we all matter.

But do we treat each other like we do?

Gary is proof that caring for others and using social media to show that can lead us to bigger success. He calls empathy “one of the biggest things to which he attribute his success.”

You can move people if they believe that you genuinely care about them. In the beginning of his legacy, he replied hundreds of email every day, even the trivial ones asking him which wine goes well with beef. That’s why this guy is influencing so many people now. It all started with one email or one view that he engaged with.

He understands happiness ultimately drives motivation which explains why he constantly stresses that family comes before work. He even walked you through his 18-hours of daily work. So when he says, “I beg you. Please do what you love!!!” it is not an empty statement. He further backs this statement by saying that you can do what you love from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. after work and spending time with family. That’s enough.

He is creating a community that people want to be a part of and we should all learn from this guy.

The Fireside Chat will cover what entrepreneurship is all about, the current state and future of social media and Gary’s strategy in Asia.

The event will take place in Mettā in Central on July 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are sold here.

A 3-a.m. ‘idea’ takes you to Macau

Senado Square in Macau

I used to daydream all day and stare out the window where my mind showed me the world on a magic carpet ride. Yeah, it didn’t get me anywhere.

But working at a startup, I grew into a person of ideas. My imaginations took me from Chile’s Atacama Desert, the dryest place on earth, all the way to the humid Macquarie Island of Australia in seconds. But a Sunday’s 3-a.m. idea actually put me on a turbo jet to Macau seven hours later.

A thought is: I will go to Macau someday.

An idea is: I will leave at 10 a.m. and get there on the boat an hour later.

Nothing was really planned out. Everything was new. I was not prepared. But sometimes the best travels are on the whim like a new business.

The counter at Shenzhen’s Shekou Ferry Terminal only took cash. Of course, I only had balance in my WeChat Pay. The ATM would not take my MasterCard.

But help always comes from an unexpected source with awesome sunglasses who didn’t understand a word of my English, but was super cool about giving me his cash in exchange of Wechat Pay.

I even passed by the long bridge between Hong Kong and Macau waters. This view was super exciting for me because once it is done, our Easiway rides will be on them. Look at how endless it goes just like our future! Cheers! For better days to come!

A few minutes in, voila! The iconic Macau’s burning sunlight ray touched my skin red.

From St. Paul’s Ruin, I worked my way down to Patio de Chon Sau, St. Dominic’s Church and Senado Square. The ruin is a good starting point especially on a hot summer day because it is way up the hill.

This travel that started on a whim led to me think how much I have change during my stay at Easiway. I used to be someone who didn’t really embark on adventures. But something snapped in me after college. I was tired of always being “almost there.” Playing it safe didn’t better my life.

I went to a good school and thought my life would start after I graduated. But nothing really happened. The world was not excited to show me wonders. It didn’t owe anyone anything.

So I did something a little out of the ordinary from my peers. I left a good paying job and started to work at a tinny tiny company which was the definition of CHAOS (at first). I didn’t even know what questions to ask then.

Here, I learned that being scared (for too long) was not okay and it gets me nowhere. (Boogie Man is only in your thoughts, remember?)

Someone else will never get the job done. So by taking action after telling myself “Screw it! I’m doing it!!!!” I got a mile further, even though it always felt impromptu. It was like fearlessly wandering the streets of Macau.

I had to learn this along with my coworkers for the product and service to be complete and it is getting there now.

Years into this company, a lot has changed. The business is growing. I am changing. I now book tickets to random places the second I have enough saved up, I am no longer afraid to talk to new people and I can say life is fun. I was a person whose world was inside my head and now I realize the real world is also exciting.

Like travelling the world.
